Wayne McKenzie is a respected Algonquin-Cree Elder, artist, former elected Chief of Timiskaming First Nation, and inspirational speaker whose teachings are deeply rooted in Anishnabe spirituality and land-based wisdom. Having grown up on the land, Wayne’s life journey is one of reclamation, healing, and cultural revitalization.
🌿 Early Life & Personal Journey
Raised in the traditional territory of the Timiskaming First Nation in northwest Québec, Wayne grew up immersed in the rhythms of the land and teachings of his people. After overcoming personal challenges—especially with addiction—he embraced the Anishnabe way of life through sacred ceremonies and a healing journey that began in Thunder Bay in 1992. This transformation shaped his spiritual path and ignited his passion to share his teachings with others.
🧑⚖️ Leadership & Community Contribution
Wayne served as Chief of Timiskaming First Nation, where he played a vital leadership role in strengthening cultural initiatives. He helped secure a co-management agreement with Parks Canada for the Obadjiwan–Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site, ensuring Indigenous perspectives and stewardship were honored. After his term, he returned to spiritual and artistic work to restore balance in his life.
